Dissociation and dissociative disorders:
When parts of the personality fragment or take over

Mild dissociative states are very common - we zone out in meetings, or become hypnotised by the road when driving. But more extreme states, which lie on a spectrum, are considered to be form of childhood PTSD. You might experience losing time, having amnesia, feeling unreal or disconnected from yourself, you may act out of character, or experience conflict or confusion around aspects of your identity. If you suspect you are experiencing dissociation, you should seek confirmation and a diagnosis from a psychiatrist trained in this type of disorder. Therapy can be an important part of recovery.
